What is the difference between a funeral service and a memorial service?

There is not a great deal of difference. A funeral service is held with the coffin present before burial or cremation.

A memorial service is generally held after cremation or burial and may include the person’s ashes, photographs or other special memorabilia. It provides the same dignified and respectful opportunity to honour and celebrate someone’s life, often in a more relaxed setting.

Can I hold a memorial service at a beach, park, club or pub?

Yes. With permission from the local council or venue, a memorial service or celebration of life can be held in almost any suitable location.

This may include a favourite beach, park, club, pub, garden or the familiar and relaxed surroundings of your own home.

My dad said he doesn’t want a funeral, but I feel he deserves something.

Many people who say they do not want a funeral are really saying they do not want the formality or expense associated with a traditional funeral.

A memorial service or celebration of life provides another option. Family and friends can gather in a relaxed atmosphere while still sharing tributes, photographs, music and treasured memories.

Should people have a memorial service instead of a funeral?

Not necessarily. A memorial service is not intended to replace a funeral—it is simply another choice available to families.

At M&M Memorials, we can create a service that is as formal or informal as you would like. A memorial service can be affordable while remaining meaningful, dignified and professionally presented.

Who organises everything?

The family arranges the cremation through a funeral director, with guidance from us when required. Many funeral directors can now arrange this process online, making it simpler and more convenient.

Once this is in place, you can contact M&M Memorials. We can help you find a suitable venue and organise the ceremony, photo presentation, music and professional PA system.

We will coordinate the service from beginning to end, allowing your family to focus on remembering and celebrating your loved one.

Who runs the service on the day?

We do. We welcome your guests, assist with memorial books when required, operate the music and photo presentation and ensure everything runs smoothly.

This allows you and your family to focus on remembering your loved one without worrying about the organisation of the service.

Is it just one person looking after the service?

No. Michael and Monique work alongside one another to care for each family and their guests.

Monique has more than 27 years of experience around the funeral industry, as well as over 20 years in customer service. She understands how to support families with professionalism, compassion and genuine care.

What experience do you have?

Michael has more than 30 years of experience in the funeral industry.

He spent his first 13 years as a funeral director, arranging funerals, caring for families and ensuring services ran smoothly. For the following 17 years, he has worked as a funeral celebrant, conducting funerals, memorial services and celebrations of life.

Can the service be formal or relaxed?

Absolutely. Your service can be as formal, informal, traditional or relaxed as you would like.

We take the time to understand the personality of your loved one and the wishes of your family, creating a farewell that feels personal, genuine and appropriate.

Does a beautiful farewell have to be expensive?

No. A beautiful, dignified and professionally presented farewell does not have to be expensive.

At M&M Memorials, we put your family and your loved one first. Regardless of your budget, our goal is to help you create the meaningful farewell you want without unnecessary expense.

Can you assist with an ashes-scattering ceremony?

Yes. We can help create and conduct a personal ashes-scattering ceremony at a meaningful location, subject to any council, venue or location requirements.

The ceremony can include music, readings, tributes, shared memories and a respectful scattering of your loved one’s ashes.
